Product Description
Raised in foster care and now the widowed mother of a little girl, Cara Moore struggles against poverty, fear, and a relentless stalker. When a trail of memories leads Cara and Lori out of New York City toward an Amish community, she follows every lead, eager for answers and a fresh start. She discovers that long-held secrets about her family history ripple beneath the surface of Dry Lake, Pennsylvania, and it's no place for an outsider. But one Amish man, Ephraim Mast, dares to fulfill the command he believes that he received from God--"Be me to her"-- despite how it threatens his way of life.

Completely opposite of the hard, untrusting Cara, Ephraim's sister Deborah also finds her dreams crumbling when the man she has pledged to build a life with begins withdrawing from Deborah and his community, including his mother, Ada Stoltzfus. Can the run-down house that Ada envisions transforming unite them toward a common purpose--or push Mahlon away forever? While Ephraim is trying to do what he believes is right, will he be shunned and lose everything--including the guarded single mother who simply longs for a better life?

Gift of Grace Books was established to glorify God in thanksgiving for his abundant grace. 2 Corinthians 4:15 "All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
It was OK  Mar 24, 2010
While it was a quick read and really gave a great perspective of modern Amish life, I thought the story itself left a lot to be desired. I had a hard time connecting to the main characters. It had the potential to be a great love story and completely missed the mark. There was very little depth to the relationship between Ephraim/Cara and in Cara's spiritual journey. I was also left wondering why Mahlon's story was so compelling, yet not expounded on - it seemed somewhat pointless. In contrast, I know the author is capable of having her readers connect as with Hannah Lapp in the Sisters of the Quilt sage, but if Ada's House becomes a series, I doubt I'd read another one.

Got Better After the First Chapter  Jan 6, 2010
Cara Moore and her daughter Lori have been running from a dangerous ex-boyfriend for most of Cara's adult life. They're running out of places to hide. Their last chance could be an Amish community that Cara remembers her mother taking her to when she was young. Not knowing anyone there, Cara and Lori hide in a barn and steal clothes and food from a nearby Amish family's house. What happens next could change their lives forever.

I couldn't get into the first chapter. The girl-runs-away-from-problems-and-joins-the-Amish story has been told often (like "Sanctuary," by Beverly and David Lewis). But as I got past the first chapter there were differences, and I became more drawn into the story and the details of the community they were touching. For example, if an unmarried male Amish man lets an outsider woman live in his house or barn, he could be shunned by the community. I did not know that kind of contact with outsiders was forbidden.

I have always found the Amish to be an interesting community. And even if Amish fiction romanticizes the culture, they are still fun to read.

Average on the scale of novels based on the plain people  Jan 3, 2010
The summaries are done quite well in other reviews. This is very fast read with a great deal of redundant storylines in chapter after chapter. I continued to wait for something to develop aside from the inevitable ending. There are few side stories of interest. You never really get to know Deborah and Mahlon well enough to care about how their story results. Modern issues facing the Amish population are touched on, but not expanded. What happens to the stalker? I can only hope that Ms. Woodsmalll answers these questions in the sequel to this, as it appears to be the first in an Ada's House Series. I can say I have enjoyed her previous stories much more than The Hope of Refuge. It seems to be a shell of a story waiting for more.

Could not put it down!  Nov 18, 2009
I decided to get this book because I had read Cindy Woodsmall's Sister of the Quilt books and I love them. The book arrived in the mail this afternoon, and no exageration, I read it all evening and have finished it. I could not put it down! Cindy Woodsmall has such a way of bringing you into her stories and completely capturing your need to know what happens next! I look forward to reading many more of Woodsmall's stories so I hope she will continue.

This is a beautiful story of love and redemption, faith and forgiveness  Oct 14, 2009
Cara Moore was raised in foster care. Her mother was dead and her father dropped her left her at a station. She ran away when the son of her foster parent would not leave her alone. She found a job, married and had a daughter. Now Cara and her daughter are on the run again.

While reading her mother's journal Cara discovers an address. She and daughter, Lori go to the Amish country of Pennsylvania. She hoped to find peace and safety. There was a sense of familiarity about the place but Cara has did not know why.

Ephraim Mast knew her true identity and offered her a place to stay. He faces the disapproval of the elders in the church.

I have nothing but high praise for Cindy Woodsmall's books. She grabbed my attention and held it through the very last page. Her characters have away of wrapping their selves around your heart and taking you on an emotional journey with them. This is a beautiful story of love and redemption, faith and forgiveness.
