Very interesting is the differences in culinary styles in the Yucatan from the rest of Mexico & Latin America. This is more than just a cookbook...it is a journey into the kitchens of the area.

"A Different Mexican Cuisine" is the fifth in the Gift of the Yucatan series. Trudy Sauri has written these delightful books to introduce children, ages nine through twelve, to a people from another culture the Yucatan peninsula of southern Mexico.
The colorful pictures and illustrations in this edition are mouth watering and tantalizing. The book is made up of twelve menus, for twelve meals with complete recipes as well as short cut ideas. These short cuts are especially helpful for the younger chefs.
I am not a gourmet expert, however I have come to appreciate the uniqueness of and the importance of authentic food to the natives of a country or culture. I have learned to enjoy the experience of sharing a meal prepared from their recipes with their flavor preferences.
Trudy Sauri epitomizes this as she tells of a different Mexican Cuisine, an authentic Yucatecan Meal. Beginning with a holiday menu including stuffed cheese ball (Bola de Queso Relleno), followed by a hearty stew menu of chickpea stew (Sopa de Garbanzo), she adds a Sunday dinner of rice with chicken (Arroz con Pollo). The eight additional menus conclude with a party treats menu of meat turnovers and crisp Tortillas (Empanadas y Panuchos). I found the barbeque menu of beef steak Yucatan style irresistible.
A quick reference guide, a listing of exotic flavors, and three tasting tips are included to help the reader get the most from their experience in the cuisine of Yucatan, Mexico.
"Gift of Yucatan: A Different Mexican Cuisine" is a rewarding cultural lesson and family experience to share with friends of every race and culture. The book can also be used as an excellent teaching resource and educational tool. Highly recommended.
