Reviews - What do our customers think?
A great book for anyone interested in the death penalthy  Oct 23, 2005
Writing a review for a book that looks into the lives of the thousands of men and women on death row (particularly the USA) is not an easy task.

My reason for purchasing this book is that for the past 18 months I have been corresponding with several men who are currently on death row in America and I was interested in looking at someone else's experiences of writing/visiting men on `the row'.

From start to finish I found this book to be easy reading and very insightful. Penny (the author) shares many of her experiences, from writing & receiving letters, visiting the USA, the views of people in regards to the death penalty, stories of changed lives of the men on death row, and cases where death sentences have been reduced to life sentences.

Penny is refreshingly honest in this book she shares very warmly her heart for the men whom she has befriended.

The title of the book `And you visited me' is an excerpt of a statement made by Jesus to His disciples to challenge them about their love for outcasts, the unlovely and the rejected people in their society. Jesus stated, `What you do to the least of these, you do for me', showing that we are to love all people, regardless of the social status.

Unfortunately, to many, death row inmates are seen as nothing more than evil or monsters, yet what Penny clearly portrays is that these men are our fellow human beings who like us on the outside have feelings, dreams, hopes and have their own story to tell.

None of the men are seeking minimise the damage that they have caused their victims/families, in fact many are only too aware and repentant for their actions, and know there is nothing they are able to do to take back what they have done.

There are stories of men who claim their innocence and the injustices of the American justice system are shown in a couple of their stories.

Penny's desire has been to show how lives can be touched and transformed by the love of another human being showing love and care to someone who by much of society has been `written off`. Some of the men Penny has corresponded with have become Christians and their lives have been brightened by receiving letters and visits from Penny.

I would recommend this book to anyone who desires to learn more about the lives of men and women on death row, and also may consider corresponding with them.

My hope is that this book serves as a call and a challenge to those who find it hard to love the unlovely and the outcast, to do just that...love them as Christ loves them!!!

You will not regret buying this book.
