This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her," answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots," and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college.

Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something." Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

	What a joyous reminder of the PBS television series Apr 30, 2010
Purchased the set for my bilingual (Japanese-American) granddaughter who lives in Japan and has read a number of the books. Watched them before sending them to her and relived the joy we experience when we first saw them on PBS a number of years ago.

I purchased this book for my 24 year old sister's birthday, and as I expected, she loved it (: We both read the books growing up and continue to love the storyline and seeing the quirky way that Anne deals with things. She is definitely an easily loved character. The movie, of course, cannot include everything found in the book as it would make it much too long, but it does maintain the main ideas and gets across the most necessary aspects. I have to say, too, that even though my husband (also in his mid-20s) laughs at Anne's drama every once in a while, he still enjoys watching the movie, too (:

This is a very good movie. I have rented it via netflix before and that video did not have chapters in the menu so I had to scan through the movie to find my spot if I stopped it. Unfortunately this does not have chapters either. I'm beginning to think this movie was just produced without convenient chapters! That's the only complaint.

I used to watch this on our PBS affiliate, and I've always thought of it as the Canadian answer to those wonderful BBC programs PBS brings us, such as Upstairs Downstairs, Duchess of Duke Street, the Edwardians, and the Masterpiece Theater specials. It certainly is of that caliber. The performances are excellent and well-cast. Anne is a very relatible character whom you root for from beginning to end.
