Overview
While visiting her brother in Hawaii, strictly raised Lily Walsh develops a close friendship with Gabe Kapaia and a deeper understanding of God, but both relationships are tested when she returns home to her disciplinarian father.

Publishers Description

Can their love survive two very different cultures?

Lily Walsh has never imagined anything like America. From supermarkets and swimsuits to the way women look men directly in the eye, she's baffled by this strange new land. Raised in a remote Asian village by her disciplinarian father, 24-year-old Lily is thrilled to visit her brother Jeff in Hawaii--until Jeff is called away on urgent business.

Left in the care of Jeff's best friend, Gabe Kapaia, and his family, Lily discovers the paradise of Oahu's north side at the Kapaia Resort. But she walks a fine line between two worlds. Can she embrace her new experiences without breaking her promise not to shame her missionary father? When Lily finds herself falling for Gabe, her heart is torn. Will her upbringing force her to make the difficult choice between true love and family honor?

Gift of Grace Books was established to glorify God in thanksgiving for his abundant grace. 2 Corinthians 4:15 "All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God."

Flat.  Mar 9, 2009
I really did not like this book.

I was a missionary in Asia for three years and the culture in the book is a terrible example of Asian culture in modern times. I was disappointed in the character of Lily. She didn't seem to grow at all. Lori Wick has absolutely no idea how culture shock works. This is the worst Lori Wick book that I have ever bought. The characters were two dimensional.

There is one place in specific that had me ready to throw the book across the room. The hero apparently one said that he was going to marry the first woman who understood a particular word -- and Lily says it. It felt out of place and like a cheap way to show that 'they should be together.'

Also, the father is an abusive person and I feel that it was cheap of Lori Wick to throw in his attitude without actually explaining more, and making it more realistic. I felt that the father's anger and attitude was a plot device instead of something real for Lily to be dealing with and asking God for help regarding.

I am all for books that can show the beauty of a godly romance, but I felt that Lori Wick should have both done more research on what it means to be a missionary, to have culture shock, and to really develop those areas so that Lily could have been a more realistic person. In the end, I feel that this venture fell flat.

Great Book  Jun 20, 2008
Purchased as a gift for my wife, who has already read it 5 times in the past, but she still loves it....

One of my favorites  Mar 2, 2007
I have just recently read this book by Lori Wick, and was delighted to find a similar heart-warming story, as i have found in her previous works. Lori Wick did a wonderful job integrating two unique cultures into one in this book. Not only was the book interesting, but also informative, as i was not very well educated on all Asian customs. This book is a great read for anyone looking to be transported into another world. Excellent book!!

mediocre, in hindsight  Sep 9, 2006
when i first picked up this book, i devoured it and liked it despite small quibbles--this was right after it was published. but picking it up again and looking through it, the book struck me as good storytelling, but second-rate. it's true--the characters are far too perfect. the situations far too contrived. and the part that bugged me the most was her invention of a whole culture just for a book, where she arbitrarily throws in ideas (some chinese, some from thin air, etc) so she can have a plot vehicle. the problem is that kashien, from an anthropological view, would not fit in anywhere in asia. this seems like a minor issue--"it's fiction", after all, but also a sign of a weak writer.

i loved the princess when i read it--and that was when i was in 6th grade. there, the concept seemed kind of cute, because it had a distinct twist on fairy tale quality that almost made the imaginary country ok. but here, maybe because i'm of asian descent, it just seemed silly and almost offensive.

anyway, it's a fun read, in the end. it's just not something i would recommend as a "definitely read this" to anyone--but if you're a lori wick fan, go for it.

A True Fairy Tale with Christian Values  Nov 2, 2005
I absolutely LOVE this book. It was the first book I owned by Lori Wick and I have purchased many since then. I believe any one who reads this book and has just a slight amount of romance in them will melt after they read this book. It shows what true love is really about in a world that alters the meaning of the word. I can not say enough good things about this book but if you are looking for light reading that will bring a smile to your face this is definitely the book to read. Happy reading.
