"The Path of Awakening" is a clear and grounded guide to healing personal suffering. It explains how the peace and joy native to every human being is obscured by the ego mind, or identification with thought. This condition can be healed through a gradual, conscious process of recognition and surrender to Truth. The Teaching in this book provides a holistic framework that addresses the physical, mental and emotional aspects of personal health in relation to the ego. This balanced focus naturally and safely enables spiritual awakening. Mindful and conscious living is suggested as a spiritual practice, and practical guidance is offered for integrating the Teaching into everyday life. This is the most progressive and comprehensive book on spiritual awakening I've found. Most authentic Teachings feel like a candle in the darkness to me; this one shines brightly like the noonday sun. The approach is direct and unyielding yet deeply compassionate. It has one purpose: to wake you up! Working with this book has helped me heal very dense and crystallized patterns I've struggled with my entire life. Just reading the book meditatively and feeling into the Truth beyond the conceptual presentation is a powerful spiritual practice. It gives me great hope for the future of humanity that a Teaching this potent and clear is now available. If you long for authentic freedom and are ready to take responsibility for your life, this book will illuminate a pathway Home. It offers invaluable guidance to anyone interested in becoming more conscious and ending their suffering completely. It receives my highest recommendation.

The Path of Awakening is a tremendously useful guide for those interested in liberation from suffering. This book contains uncompromising truth that can be felt as a welcome shock. I'd say it's the double espresso or punk rock of literature on Awakening, its tone and imagery is fresh, strong and insistent. The writing style is also very much like the experience of sitting zazen; it is powerful and ruthless, yet always fundamentally helpful. The reader is not asked to adopt new beliefs or philosophies, but to question and dismantle every belief. The Path of Awakening encourages healthy development of the person - the mental, psychological, physical and emotional 'vehicle' - not as an end in itself, but as a means of removing barriers to freedom and thus making awakening more possible. There is a strong emphasis on relating consciously to content (thoughts, feelings, situations, other people), with the underlying understanding that our relationship to the content in our lives is more important than the content itself. Each chapter suggests a practice and builds on the previous chapter to help the person integrate the practices and develop stronger ability to be honest. Similar to the writings of Eckhart Tolle or The Work of Byron Katie, The Path of Awakening is an expose on the cause of human suffering and a compassionate guide to the way out of suffering based on the author's own direct experience. Although the message is essentially 'Buddhist', familiarity with Buddhism is not necessary or even recommended to the reader. The Path of Awakening is simply for the person who is curious about the possibility of an end to suffering. The Path of Awakening is the most comprehensive book that I have read on the subject of spiritual awakening. There is not a works cited, which may surprise more academically minded readers. I find that evidence of the author's extensive study and experience can be felt in the heart of his writing. This work has the potential to take you far on a direct route toward deeper practice and does not neglect to provide intellectual understanding along the way. I highly recommend this book. It works.
