 | A much better modern translation this is Sep 20, 2008 |
This is indeed a much accurate modern bible translation. In my last 15 years of collection i have collected nearly every english bible i could find. Mofatt, God's Word, NLT, KJV, NKJV, RSV, NRSV, Amplified, CEV, ASV, NASB, NIV, LB...you name it.
For modern translation i would rate the unbiased and accuracy of this Holman translation as one of the best along with ESV.
The worst? CEV, NIV. | | | | A worthy effort and worthy translation Nov 6, 2006 |
I was pleasantly surprised by this Bible, it is a very readable but very accurate version of the Bible, while not without its slight flaws, I think this Bible combines the fidelity of the NASB with the readability of the NIV. I have been a pleased user of the NASB and comparing it to the original langauges have been pleased with the translators' efforts to capture the literal meanings as well as can be done. The Holman seems to be just about as accurate literally, but provides a very readable text by capturing most of the literal meaning of the wording but all of the intended meaning of the passage. It is a very pleasing Bible.
My only complaint may be petty, but I don't like the book design. I have the hardback version, and it will be durable for extended use but will not last once the binding begins to give way. I think a more traditional flexible leather version with more care in the actual binding would be in order, but then price would necessarily rise. If one does not use margins for notes, it will not be an issue since the Holman folks have priced this Bible well and sacrificed the highest quality for affordability. Since it is affordable, one could easily replace a worn Bible, but notetakers will cringe at starting a "new" Bible at the expense of their notes.
A very good Bible, one I like and will continue to use beside the NASB and the Geneva Bible. | | | | If I could have only 1 Bible..... Jul 22, 2006 |
I recently bought this Bible after carefully comparing the text online at the publisher's website. The "Goals of this translation" stated in the HCSB Introduction are all honorable and I'd argue that they did acheive them. This is an accurate, readable Bible in contemporary English. The study helps are valuable and the accuracy was not compromised due to cultural or social agendas(gender inclusive trend). The footnotes in this Bible are educational. A good example is found in the difficult passage of 1 Sam.6:19 "God struck down the men of Beth-shemesh because they looked inside the ark of the Lord.He struck Down 70 men[out of]50,000 men.."The footnote reads "Some Hb mss,Josephus read 70 men."Study of other Bible versions will show that there are many different interpretations of this verse. The HCSB has a sensible rendering of the passage. This is not a "study" Bible per se.But the additional helps were a surprise! Some features that I really like are: "Where to Turn" is a convenient, helpful section. The Table of Weights and Measures and the Bullet Notes come in handy also. The words of Christ in red. The bold typeface of the OT passages when quoted in the NT. The use of "Yahweh" in the OT when the text emphasizes The Name."Yahweh" is likely not the actual name(YaHUaH) but a step toward recognising the importance of The Name is a positive in this translation in my opinion. Uses "Messiah" in a Jewish context and "Christ" in a Christian context. The quality of this hardcover binding is excellent, especially considering the very reasonable price! This Bible is versatile enough that a new student or an older student of the Bible will both benefit from it's use. I think the editors kept the integrity of the text while making it very readable. If I could keep just one Bible from my library, after some deliberation I would choose the Holman Christian Standard Bible!
| | | | A very careful translation by a very egotistical publisher Jan 29, 2006 |
| True, the translation itself is good and accurate, appropriate for use in moderate study (a more literal translation would be preferred for serious study) and devotion, however attention should be given to the attitude of the publisher. I was given a copy of this Bible as a gift from my church for my college graduation, but was already familiar with both it and the storm of controversy surrounding it among Christian scholars at my school. The problem was not the translation, but the claims that the publisher makes about itself. Just read the back of the box and you will find the attitude of the HCSB about itself - as if to say "This is the best Bible ever (seriously, you can trust us, we made it!, aren't you proud of us for enlightening the world with our wonderful abilities?" The publisher faithfully translates the scriptures (I suppose) but fails to acknowledge one of the most important themes in all of scripture - humility: that man is fallen and below the perfect God, whose Word this book seeks to make known. In short, they translate faithfully and frankly are too darn proud of it. God bless them, but I'll spend my money on someone who knows their place in the world. | | | | A little awkward, but still a great read. Dec 2, 2005 |
The CSB can be a tad confusing in some areas, and I sometimes had to read certain passages over again to get at the meaning. True, it is not quite as smooth as the English Standard Version or the New American Standard Bible, but I do enjoy it in spite of these problems. I mean, let's face it: no Bible translation is going to be perfect, as translating the original Hebrew and Greek is never a smooth process. But I do treasure the CSB for its positive points, and I think most who read it will find it a good devotional Bible, if not the greatest for overall study. The One Year CSB Bible with devotions by Selwyn Hughes is also very good.
I have purchased the "Experiencing The Word" CSB Audio Bible here on this site, and David Payne's narration is REALLY WONDERFUL!!! If you're not a fan of print Bibles, I would very highly recommend the complete audio Bible. | | | Write your own review about HCSB Holy Bible-Red-Letter Text Edition-HC
