Item Description... Adolf Hitler's ominous statements seem only a distant threat to eleven-year-old Rudi Kaplan. But when the Nazi forces invade Poland and bomb his home city of Warsaw, Rudi finds out that he is Hitler's enemy not only because he is a Pole, but also because he's a Jew--and a Christian. The next few years change Rudi's life forever. With only his imprisoned father's promise that they will be reunited after the war, Rudi must learn how to survive in hiding, how to be truly brave, and how to overcome the hatred of his enemies. He must learn to die to himself and to trust the God who is mightier than any army. Grades 4-7.

A Fathers Promise
By Donnalynn Hess
Ages: 10 and up.
A twelve year old boy named Rudi lived in Warsaw, Poland during 1939 to 1945. His life was going to be changed forever. The Nazis forced Rudi and his father out of their apartment. They had to find a new home so they lived in a bombed out office building. There were holes in the walls and everything was cracked. Later Rudi's best friend Salek had his dad taken away to a concentration camp. Later in the book his dad comes back. In the end of 1939 Rudi's dad hears that the Germans are after Rudi's dad. Afraid that he will be taken away, Rudi's dad sends Rudi to live with a resistance group in the woods. While Rudi is in the woods he sees a truck taking people to a concentration camp. A nightmare was about to come true. His dad was in the truck. Rudi finds the resistance group and stays with them for about one year. But then the leader of the group, Oscar, leaves to go to Warsaw to capture German soldiers. Rudi lives in the woods with a girl named Ingrid who he found abandoned in a haystack. Rudi lived in the woods for six years. He wanted to go back to Warsaw. He tried to find his father. After a month of searching Rudi was not able to find his father. Read the book to find out if he finds his father or not. This book is fiction but it could be a real story. I would give this book five stars out of five stars. This book never has a dull moment. It has a lot of detail and makes you want to keep reading. This was Ms. Hess's first novel. A Fathers Promise was the best book I have ever read. If you like Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, you would love this book. I am so surprised this book did not get an award. I think it should have. This book is very powerful. It is so sad what the soldiers did to the Jews, and what became of Warsaw. In the back of the book there are photographs of Hitler invading Warsaw. There is also a map of Poland in the back. Everybody must read this book! It is so good!

| I wanted to like this book. The author set the main character in a very exciting time frame- Hitler's occupation of Poland. I was anxious to see how this character's faith would be stretched and deepened as a young man. But, alas, it is not well written. Character development is poor and large gaps in the narrative. I could go on. Read "The Hiding Place." | | | | A Father's Promise... Jan 29, 2004 |
| Oh My Gosh. This is one of the best books I've ever read! I had to read last year in my homeroom english class and I loved it! I always like to read ahead, so I did and finished the book in 2 hours because I couldn't put it down, and I borrowed it from the school library and read it again! It was great. It made you feel like you were right along side Rudy and was with him in every adventure. It's one of those books that make you feel good inside. I highly recommend it. I would have given it 10 stars if I could. If you're intrested in World War II, than this is the book for you. I got closer to God while I read this book, and learned to count all my blessings The Lord has given me. I loved this book and so will you if you read it!!!!!! | | | | An Excellent Book Apr 24, 2001 |
| When I first started reading A Father's Promise I wasn't so sure about the book but after the second chapter it was hard for me to put it down. Since the main character is only about my age it was even more exciting while I was reading. I would have to say that this is one of the most excellent books that I have ever read. | | | | A great book!!!! May 16, 1999 |
