New Testament Greek grammar forms through simple songs. It is not designed to compete with existing Greek grammar books, but to serve as a required supplemental resource for elementary Greek classes. Indeed, it has been designed to be used alongside of any introductory grammar. A professor can simply assign to his or her students any (or some) of the songs for the paradigms a particular elementary grammar employs. In this way, students will actually remember what they have learned. (As we are all aware, people do not easily forget something learned via song.)The entire project includes songs for indicative verb endings, participles, infinitives, imperatives, contract forms, and prepositions, among others. All but the last song can be sung in 15 seconds or less. Parsing is enormously easier through this method. And it is a lot more fun than traditional methods. (Are we allowed to even use the word 'fun' in reference to elementary Greek? Absolutely!) Beginning Greek students can listen to the CD as they drive to and from school or work, or put it on their iPod. These songs are so simple that students who have used them complain about waking up in the middle of the night with the songs running through their heads. You'll never hear that complaint from students who have had to use rote memory to learn grammar forms.

Pros:
1. This worked to help me learn paradigms. A great supplement to other self-teaching materials I have been using. Speeds up the memorization part of the process while reducing the drudgery of it.
2. Fairly painless to listen to for educational songs. I was actually impressed with the musicality and the instrumentation of these familiar children's tunes. Despite what I would have expected, the arrangements have some musical variety from one song to the next. Some songs have a bluesy sense to them, others tend to rock along, and there is even one where the piano does a series of arpeggios that actually sounds pretty. I'm not recommending it for a Grammy or anything, but somebody did a good job of arranging these familiar tunes so that they are catchy, interesting, and surprisingly fun and entertaining to hear while you are learning. Of course, if you are looking for something to put in the CD player for pure listening pleasure, this probably won't be your first choice (come on, it's Koine Greek paradigms set to Three Blind Mice and the Alphabet Song). But chances are you are turning to this CD as a learning aid, and for that purpose I found that the arrangements were quite well done.
Cons/Miscellaneous:
1. The songs move along at a fairly brisk clip. It's hard to keep up with the songs when first learning. I had to learn by first listening to a song CD and checking the "words" in the accompanying booklet, then singing the song without the CD a few times, and then try singing with the CD until I could keep up. In the long run, this method works, and once I get a song, it sticks and I can sing it as fast as I need to.
2. I have learned that knowing the songs by rote memory is just the beginning of the learning process. I find I also need to listen to or sing the songs while at the same time thinking about what the individual words or endings MEAN. Again, the speed at which the songs are presented on the CD makes this difficult because the words really whiz by. However, this process is something I can do at my own speed when I have a moment free to think and concentrate, like when I'm waiting in line at the store or having trouble falling asleep (a double bonus: thinking through the songs like this also helps to solve the trouble sleeping!). | | | | Awesome Jan 1, 2010 |
| I am using "Sing and Learn New Testament Greek" audio CD by Kenneth Berding with "Basics of Biblical Greek" Grammar by William D. Mounce plus workbook. Anyone can learn Greek with these material. I am using it with "Biblical Greek Survival Kit" and "English Grammar in Use" by Raymond Murphy (Third Edition with Cd-Rom). Awesome! | I was quite disappointed in this one. (Purchased on Audible so at least it only cost me five or six dollars.) Tempo is way too fast, words are not pronounced clearly, and while this is subjective, I did not find the tunes to be all that memorable. It seems like Mounce handed the project off to a guy he knew, who happened to play music, and then just accepted whatever he came up with. This could have been a very useful tool, but wound up being a $5.00 experiment. If you can borrow a copy to listen to before you buy, I highly recommend taking that approach. I notice that New Testament Greek Vocabulary, read by Jonathan T. Pennington has audio samplings before you buy. This one not having samples might be a good hint. | | |  | Too fast Jul 31, 2009 |
| If you don't know the info in the songs, the tempo is too fast to memorize it. Even following along with the lyrics sheet on repeat play did not help me with the preposition song- which I was trying to memorize for my Biblical Greek proficiency test.
