| I like to read and seldom find a book that I just can't put down until now. Kabul 24 is a book you will want to read from cover to cover in one sitting. The way it is written, you will feel as if you are right there with the people in their cells, seeing their plight from their perspective. When they feel something emotionally it is as if you feel it too. It paints such a picture that it is ingrained in your mind as if you were watching a movie and can see the people and the places they are being held. Kabul 24 made me see things about this `war' we are facing with new eyes. I say new eyes because my husband has served in Iraq and have friends that serve and have served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I would like to think I had a good idea about the politics and religion over there but after reading this book things became more clear about our overseas threat. I urge you to read this book if not to learn about the stories of the people involved but to gain a better understanding of what are people are fighting and risking their lives for. | | |  | Interesting Nov 24, 2009 |

It is wonderful this account of the amazing liberation of the 24 Shelter Now International employees from the Afghan Taliban is now available in print! The importance of this book is not so much in alerting people to the dangerous, opressive practices of the captors as in the series of miraculous answers to prayers that led to captives' freedom. Having witnessed the return of two of the SNI employees to America, it is fascinating to learn the entire "story behind the story".
The authors gathered the details of the ordeal primarily through extensive interviews with the 8 western captives. They have written an intensely factual, day-by-day account of the capture, imprisonment, interrogation, intimidation, suffering, peril, and harrowing escape. The authors highlight the ways the captives clung through faith to the hope God would provide a way out that would not involve the loss of any lives. They give credit to sympathetic Afghan people who had witnessed SNI's generous work on development projects and disagreed with the use of the Christian workers as pawns in the Taliban's power games. Rather than overly dramatizing the events, the authors allow the events to speak volumes for themselves.
The desperate conditions in Afghanistan, a factional and fractious country, would discourage most people from ever considering traveling there, much less leaving home behind and working there under very marginal conditions. The SNI workers' love and understanding of the people not only brought them there initially, but also led most of them to return a short time after their terrifing experiences to recommence their much-needed work. So, while their terrible trial had a happy ending, the best is yet to come as the work marches on.

9/11 is a date fixed indelibly in the mind of the world. Millions throughout the world stood transfixed at the horror that unfolded before their eyes. On the same day the West's great hope for Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Lion of Panjshir, was assassinated by a bomb built into the video camera of a fake cameraman. While the world and Afghanis reeled the repercussions were impossible to guess for a much smaller group.
Eight western members of Shelter Now, a Christian relief agency had already spent more than a month as the abducted prisoners of the Taliban which then ruled Afghanistan. As the declared intention of the US to launch a punitive strike on Afghanistan became clear their status changed from prisoner to hostage and part of the Taliban's human shield. Another two months would pass with the dangers mounting day by day before their story concluded. Time after time like those on Paul's shipwreck they gave up all hope of being rescued, and yet time after time, hope arose as they prayed.
They had put a complex prayer before God. They asked for a perfect rescue in which no life, either of hostage or captors would be lost. The intricate way in which God answered this extraordinary prayer is the story of Kabul24. Eight Christian westerners, two men and 6 women were kept, for the most part, in separate parts of various prisons and contact was very sparse. 16 Muslim Afghan employees of Shelter Now were also arrested and incarcerated in even more hideous conditions. Eight westerners and 16 Afghans - the Kabul 24.
This is a gripping story expertly told and will have you on the edge of your seat as you read and yet is by no means theatrical in the telling. I read this book at a single sitting and when I put it down my wife picked it up and read it a single sitting. The skill of the writers never obtrudes into the story but carries the story faithfully through the captives personal descent into a modern equivalent of Dante's inferno.
We see, said Paul, that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love him and and are the called ones to his purpose. That "working all things together", synergy in Greek, is the distinctive fingerprint of a sovereign God. This book will frighten you and encourage you. "God" said the Puritans, "only gives dying grace in the dying hour." I know of no modern equivalent to illustrate that truth to compare with Kabul24. This is a 'must read' modern missionary classic.

| Kabul 24 was a very eye opening book. The account told of the kidnap victims being held hostage, their living conditions, treatment, and danger they were put in was completely shocking. The story of their faith, how they stood firm in their convictions, never waivering from their faith, never allowing their spirits to be broken was an inspiring, heart touching story of how the human spirit can endure the worst of predicaments. Kabul 24 is does not just inspire faith, but humbles the soul.
